A warm welcome after work or after a hot sunny days’ walk – to come back to a pecking chook.

I still love their desire to join us in the house – by window, stable back door or just the right opportunity presented….

Wot a haul

Last year we planted four seed potatoes and got a haul of about 100.  This year we planted a rainforest of about 30 and so far have dug up half – almost all the earlies as we were a bit worried about blight.

A good haul

Average only about 10-12 per plant this year but some huge ones (we didn’t pay attention to the map of different types so not sure which ones are the baking potato type but assume the humungus ones are them).

Started to see some bushing of the carrots too so thinning them a little more reaps some tasty baby ones.

This together with our lovelingly produced home fresh free range eggs (lots off required) leads us nicely to be able to produce delish family receipe/cooking style spanish tortillas which are just the best ever….

I had heard of dust baths by chickens but never really knew the process or reality until yesterday!

They look a bit dead (as do all my herbs!!!) but they’re not.  They’re like dogs rolling around in bird poo – never thought that chickens would roll around like that getting totally covered in dry dirt! Then after about an hour of that, they strutt around fluffing themselves to shake the dirt out! Quite bizarre and a very good reason to get chicks and to give them lots of free range space!  We just need to decide if a kitchen-handy herb garden is more important??!!!

it was my birthday….

And fantastic lady indoors got me one very great thing especially relevant to this blog (amongst other really great things including a her-decorated cereal bowl which I love).

She got me the river cottage cookbook (… erm, book !).  River Cottage for those non-english visitors is a big thing here at the moment, a chef with a business/tv/media company promoting good smallholding/self-sufficiency/proper diet and tastebud ness (pig brain anyone?) etc etc etc.

Hugh has silly hair but other than that he is very cool.

So her indoors has been keen on the idea of some pigs for a while, and I’ve always thought it was a little way off or maybe a bit too much for us….. but I’m coming around to the idea definitly.  Need to give it some thought for two weaners to baconers next Feb to October?!! tee hee.  ya boo to Rach who would never manage that in her city earth patch!!! har har ! (But maybe we’ll call then Rach n Tom?!)

Lots of fantastic information, advice and recipies about all cuts of meat (hence the pig brain reference for “brawn” stew type stuff, or even “fried with a heap of garlic…..” :> ????!!)

Excellent present, highly recommended.  Plus subscribe to the river cottage site/blogs etc – note the especially good attempt at influencing tescos.

So update due.  Good weather and a bit of tidying at the weekend….  pls excuse the rubbish photos/graphics compared to most peoples blogs – 1) I barely grab a chance to grab pics and upload them 2) we don’t have a flashy camera, 3) see 1 again.  :>  4) updates’ existence first perfection maybe second  5) see 3.

definitly some learnings this year – more fustrations too this year, but potatoes, peas, lettuce and onions are really pleasing.  Hoping that carrots, peas and tomatoes (and chillies/peppers) come out at some point!!
