Wot a haul July 24, 2008

Last year we planted four seed potatoes and got a haul of about 100.  This year we planted a rainforest of about 30 and so far have dug up half – almost all the earlies as we were a bit worried about blight.

A good haul

Average only about 10-12 per plant this year but some huge ones (we didn’t pay attention to the map of different types so not sure which ones are the baking potato type but assume the humungus ones are them).

Started to see some bushing of the carrots too so thinning them a little more reaps some tasty baby ones.

 

This together with our lovelingly produced home fresh free range eggs (lots off required) leads us nicely to be able to produce delish family receipe/cooking style spanish tortillas which are just the best ever….

If you look at the similarities:

– I recently cooked home made pizza at a party for my lad mates

– I have a preference for Sainsburys (although can’t afford it week to week)

– I have chickens at home and strongly support free-range ethics/culture

– I am enthusastic and active in growing my own veg and cooking with flavour

– I have a top totty wife and lovely daughters with nice names

– I’m bit of a southerner and can speak a bit cockney (my son)

Strange eh? TV show and loada money please!

 The middle one is a nigeybodge.  I had the debate with her indoors about whether a nigeybodge is only a bodge if you try to do something well/right and it turns out a bit naff – or as in this case can you deliberatly set out to make something not too good and perfect and it still be classified as a nigeybodge.

The bodgeness spreads now to cakeness.

In trying to support a charity NCT nearly-new-sale I did really well at making some cakes.  These are my current usual ‘loaf style’ things like coconut or granny-tea-loaf (v nice).

Dear wife suggested a lemon drizzle sponge cake (round type) which would have been my 2nd ever cake of this style (previous one was okish with the help of the 10yr old d daughter).  As photos below testify, all did not go to plan especially with the proportions hopefully visable with the fork in place.  Apparently my inability to notice pencil amendments to the quantities in the recipie book, caused I might add by doing this at 11pm the night before, meant that my cake in tin an inch too wide in diameter didn’t rise to the job.

Quick nigeybodge meant that cutting it in two, and making it a double layer cake with lemon curd inside instead rescued the situation.  To console myself further I made two more stonking banana, walnut & date loafs!!!

Shout out to The Big Sofa for the idea for baby beef wellingtons.  Very nice and highly recommended.  I used Sherry rather than maderia, and beef medallions meat which was may a bit chewy but I was being cheap.  It all came out lovely (mine rare and hers – preggers – well done) and really filling.  yum yum.

And my first expedition with puff pastry too.

They were a bit massive and full – I think because I ended up having q large bits of steak, so I cut them in half and had 2-layers-of-meat wellingtons like a double-cheeseburger!! But real ones have a huge joint of beef in them so it must be ok!!
